The Lemosho Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the west, beginning in a remote landscape before crossing the Shira Plateau and joining the mountain's southern circuit. Over eight days, the route gives you time to walk slowly, acclimatise naturally and experience the changing landscapes of Kilimanjaro on the way to Uhuru Peak.
Walk slowly. Breathe deeply. Let the mountain reveal itself one landscape at a time.
The Lemosho Route is designed around gradual acclimatisation, changing scenery and a measured approach to the summit.
After registration at Lemosho Gate, the trek begins through the lush montane rainforest. The first day is deliberately gentle, allowing you to settle into the rhythm of the mountain before reaching Big Tree Camp.
The forest begins to open as the route climbs towards the heather and moorland zone. The landscape becomes wider, quieter and increasingly dramatic as you approach the Shira Plateau.
A relatively gentle day across the Shira Plateau. This section allows the body to continue adapting while the mountain opens into enormous skies and volcanic landscapes. You spend the night at Shira 2 Camp.
The route crosses the high alpine landscape towards Lava Tower before descending towards Barranco. This classic acclimatisation day introduces you to one of Kilimanjaro's most recognisable landscapes beneath the Barranco Wall.
The morning begins with the Barranco Wall. After the climb, the trail continues through the high alpine terrain towards Karanga Camp, with dramatic views across the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro.
Continue towards Barafu Camp, the high camp from which the summit attempt begins. The landscape becomes increasingly sparse and volcanic. Rest, hydrate and prepare for the summit night ahead.
The summit attempt begins in the early hours. Ascend through the darkness towards Stella Point before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the summit of Kilimanjaro. After celebrating the summit, descend towards Mweka Camp for the night.
Your final morning follows the trail down through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. After completing the mountain journey, you meet your vehicle and continue onward to your next destination.
Lemosho begins in the west, crosses the Shira Plateau and joins the southern circuit before the summit approach.
Every mountain route has its own character. Explore other Kilimanjaro journeys and find the approach that feels right for you.
Lemosho combines a remote western approach with the dramatic southern landscapes of Kilimanjaro. Its longer itinerary gives the journey room to breathe and allows you to experience the mountain progressively rather than rushing towards the summit.
Start in the western forest before moving gradually into the open highlands.
