The Machame Route is one of Kilimanjaro's most scenic approaches to Uhuru Peak, moving from rainforest through moorland and alpine desert before the summit.
Over seven days, the route allows time to experience the changing landscapes of the mountain while gradually gaining altitude toward Africa's highest summit.
This itinerary is designed as a private guided mountain journey, with the emphasis on steady walking, acclimatization, mountain scenery and reaching the summit responsibly.
Walk slowly, acclimatize carefully and let the mountain reveal itself one landscape at a time.
A carefully paced Machame journey from the rainforest to Uhuru Peak and down through Mweka.
After breakfast, drive from Arusha or Moshi to Machame Gate. Complete park registration before beginning the trek through the lush montane forest.
The trail gradually climbs through the rainforest toward Machame Camp, where you spend the first night on the mountain.
Hiking: approximately 5–7 hours depending on pace and conditions.
Leave the forest behind as the landscape changes into heather and moorland.
The trail becomes more open, with increasingly broad views toward Kibo and the surrounding mountain landscape.
Arrive at Shira Camp for dinner and overnight rest.
Trek across the Shira Plateau toward the higher volcanic landscape of Kilimanjaro.
The route passes through striking high-altitude scenery before approaching Lava Tower and continuing toward Barranco.
Descending toward Barranco after reaching higher altitude helps the itinerary continue its gradual acclimatization strategy.
Begin the morning with the famous Barranco Wall. The climb is steep in places but is a trekking section rather than technical climbing.
Continue through the alpine landscape toward Karanga Camp, with dramatic views of Kibo and the surrounding ridges.
Trek through the alpine desert toward Barafu Camp, the principal high camp used before the summit attempt.
Arrive early enough to rest, eat and prepare your equipment for the summit night.
Your guide will brief you on the summit schedule, weather and preparation.
The summit attempt begins during the night. Walk slowly toward Stella Point before continuing along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak.
At approximately 5,895 metres, Uhuru Peak is the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest point in Africa.
After time at the summit, descend toward Barafu and continue down to Mweka Camp for the night.
Your final morning begins with a descent through the forest toward Mweka Gate.
Complete the park exit procedures and meet your vehicle for transfer back to Moshi or Arusha.
Your Machame adventure comes to an end with time to rest, celebrate and reflect on the climb.
Every climb is arranged privately and can be tailored around your travel dates, group size, accommodation before and after the mountain, transfers and preferred service level.
Machame is valued for its changing scenery, moving from forest into open highland landscapes and eventually toward the alpine summit zone.
Forest, moorland, volcanic ridges and high-altitude landscapes create a varied mountain experience.
The longer itinerary gives more time for gradual altitude gain than shorter versions of the route.
The journey culminates at Uhuru Peak before the descent through Mweka.
Your climb is supported by a professional guiding and mountain support team.
