Itinerary Details

Six days.
One summit.

A carefully paced Marangu journey from the rainforest to Uhuru Peak and back through the mountain's changing ecological zones.

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut +

After breakfast, drive to Marangu Gate and complete the park registration procedures before beginning your climb.

The trail enters the lush montane rainforest and gradually climbs toward Mandara Hut, surrounded by dense vegetation and mountain forest.

Hiking: approximately 4–5 hours depending on pace and trail conditions.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut +

Leave the rainforest behind as the route enters the open moorland zone of Kilimanjaro.

Continue toward Horombo Hut with views opening toward Kibo and Mawenzi as the vegetation becomes increasingly sparse.

Spend the evening resting and allowing your body to adapt to the increasing altitude.

Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut +

Continue upward from Horombo into the high alpine environment of Kilimanjaro.

The trail crosses the broad saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo before approaching Kibo Hut, the final mountain accommodation before the summit attempt.

The afternoon is dedicated to rest, hydration and preparation for the summit night.

Day 4: Kibo Hut → Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut +

The summit attempt begins during the night, climbing slowly toward the upper slopes of Kibo.

Continue toward Gilman's Point before following the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro.

At 5,895 metres, Uhuru Peak is the highest point in Africa. After reaching the summit, descend back toward Horombo Hut for rest.

Day 5: Horombo Hut to Mandara Hut +

After breakfast, begin the descent through the moorland toward Mandara Hut.

As you lose altitude, the landscape gradually becomes greener and the atmosphere of the lower mountain returns.

Spend your final night on the mountain at Mandara Hut.

Day 6: Mandara Hut to Marangu Gate +

Make your final descent through the rainforest toward Marangu Gate.

Complete the park exit procedures before meeting your vehicle for transfer back to Moshi or Arusha.

Your Marangu Route adventure comes to an end, leaving you with the memory of reaching the Roof of Africa.
